Texas Moss Agate
by Neural on Jun.27, 2009, under Uncategorized
This was cut from the same slab that the previous moss agate cabochon was cut from. Came out quite well. The reds in it are pretty and the overall structure is just fascinating.

Actually, this is really Idaho Opal 1. This is the first cabochon I made from the rough, and it has been wire wrapped by my wife. It came out absolutely beautiful.

Idaho Opal

But not what you might expect. Some time ago a friend gave me a couple pieces of low grade Idaho Opal rough. While at his home, I cut one piece into a stone that came out rather nicely, especially since I hand cut it (no dop sticks). The second piece kinda got left out due to time, but I had it laying around and had eventually rounded off the edges so it didn’t chip. Well, my lovely wife wanted me to take the original, give it a higher polish and shape it a little, so she could wire wrap it. The result came out beautiful when she was done wrapping it. She wore it to work, and one of her co-workers wanted one just like it, so I was asked to finish shaping and polishing the second piece, and I believe it came out rather well. Length from top to bottom is about 30mm or so.

Will post pics of the finished product once she has it wrapped.

My wife has taken some more of my cabochons and wire wrapped them. They have come out very well, especially considering that she’s just starting out.

Sometimes they just don’t work out

This is what it looks like when you waste 15 minutes on opal you probably shouldn’t have started out on in the first place. ![]()

Opal & Obsidian pendant

This one came out quite well I think. The hole drilled for the opal was the perfect size to seat it in place.
This is one that will go in line for my wife to wrap. The opal itself is 7mm x 7mm in size.

“Malaise”

That’s an apt word for my current situation. My friend Robin put it quite accurately.
No stones and such for a week now. I have however been using a pen to design pendants and such, so have some progress, just can’t show it here. Hopefully will get to cut some opals tomorrow to add some more images to the site.
