Opals, for the win!
Well, this confirmed my suspicion about the other stones I’ve been making. It’s not me that is the problem with the low quality finish, and it’s not the machine, it’s the material I’m working with. It just simply won’t polish up. Take a look at the difference between the polish on this opal, and the polish on the Dalmation Jasper in the previous post, and you’ll easily see what I mean. On the opal, the reflection of the light source is nearly perfect. If the stone was a black opal, you’d see even more detail on the light, but the white of the body washes out detail on this one. $30 at our Etsy store

Dalmation Jasper Cabochon
by Neural on Apr.30, 2009, under Non-Opal
13mm x 10mm x 4mm
This was a failed attempt at making a calibrated cabochon. Was supposed to be 14mm on the long axis, but I somehow managed to grind off a millimeters worth of materal. Back to the drawing board.

Zombie Stone!!!*

*note: “zombie stone” is not an official name for any mineral that I know of, this is merely a commentary on the appearance of this particular cabochon.

by Neural on Apr.24, 2009, under Opals
This beautiful opal is a recent favorite, and I think it’s a good one to start the blog off with.
It measures 14mm x 11mm x 5mm, and weights 5.6carats.
It is from the 12mile field in Coober Pedy, Australia.
