Stone Canyon Jasper Pendant
by Neural on Mar.29, 2010, under Jewelry, Non-Opal
I had a bezel that didn’t work out size-wise for another stone, so I cut a piece of Stone Canyon Jasper to fit this one. I wasn’t sure what to do with it, but the filigree wire was what ended up happening.

The first of these is the largest cabochon I’ve ever cut, and is also the first I’ve cut with an inside curve to it. It is just over 2″ long. The second one is about 1.25″ long.

This is a Dichroic Glass cabochon that a friend sent me. It had some issues with uneven-ness across the surface, so I took it to the Genie and smoothed it out. The picture came out really amazing. (Note:the verticle stripes on the left side are the reflection of the sun through the blinds)

This is a really dark Sodalite cabochon that is 16.5mm x 12.5mm in size. It has an interesting silver chatoyance to it from certain angles which I’ve not seen in the Sodalite that I’ve worked with before. However this is the darkest stuff I’ve worked with so far as well, so maybe it’s natural for the black stone to do that. The picture of the stone overall makes it look messy because it has great polish and is reflecting a lot of what’s around it, and because the silver chatoyance is showing up slightly as well. It’s a beautiful stone that I’ll have to figure out how to photograph better.
It started from the piece of rough on the left in this picture:

And the finished cabochon:

This is the oval I was meaning to cut yesterday when I got sidetracked by the off cut.

I got a little freebie slab with a slab I bought off ebay. I have a nice oval cut for it, but while the oval was cooling on the dop stick, I decided to play with this offcut from it, and ended up with a nice little freeform. The oval has yet to be cut. ![]()
It is one inch long along the long side, for scale reference.

Bloodstone

This started out nice, but seemed to pick up more and more problems along the way. First the pitting, then the cracking.
